$15,000 needed by March 31

Through the generous support of many, we have almost reached our initial goal set in August of $50,000. However, additional costs of materials and transportation have increased the cost of the building by $15,000. We need your help to raise this by March 31 to complete construction of the building before the rainy season begins. Please help identify church or school groups that would be willing to have a fundraiser for the clinic. Jok and Bol are available to present a program on current events in South Sudan, the newest country in the world, and the need for a health clinic in their village. Contact us at info@sudanclinic.org for more information. And if you are able, please make a personal tax deductible donation to the clinic. by clicking on DONATE on the left of this page. Thank you for your support of the Sudan Health Clinic.

Piol Health Clinic NEEDS YOUR HELP!

This has been an exciting year for South Sudan. First of all, in January the people of South Sudan voted 98.6% for separation from the North. After decades of war, displacement, and being second class citizens, we were free at last. Then on July 9th, we celebrated the first Independence Day for the Republic of South Sudan (ROSS). None of this would have been possible if it were not for the support from the people and the government of the United States. Thank you!

We are excited to watch our new country develop, but we will continue to need help from the developed countries and friends like you. The ROSS has a well designed plan to provide health care services, but does not have the resources yet to make it possible in rural areas like our village of Piol. This is the reason we need to continue our effort at the health clinic.

In January we installed solar panels which power a refrigerator to store vaccines. In April we hired three inoculators who began to vaccinate children from preventable diseases. Through October they vaccinated 150 children from measles, polio, DPT, and TB. And their work continues. We have also provided Tetanus Toxoid immunizations for women who are pregnant or are of child bearing age. To Our next project is to build a maternal and child health care unit with an exam/delivery room and maternity ward, where expectant mothers can receive medical care from a nurse mid/wife.

We need your help to raise enough money to complete the construction before the rainy season starts again in May. If you have made a contribution to the clinic this year, we say thank you. If not, please consider making a donation before the end of the year. We currently have a donor who will match contributions made by January 31. Please take advantage of this and help us reduce maternal mortality and infant deaths in Piol.

Thank you again for your support. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas holiday with your family.

Sincerely

Jok Dau and Bol Aweng

Tax deductible contributions to the clinic can be made on line at www.sudanclinic.org or to: Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church-Sudan Clinic and mailed to 4343 Dublin Rd. Hilliard, OH 43026.

And then there was LIGHT! ....and cold

Piol Village in Southern Sudan gets electricity and hope.
After months of coordination across thousands of miles, we installed a solar energy system in January at the clinic in Jok and Bol’s village. This is the first electricity in the village or anywhere within 15 miles, and it powers a refrigerator that will soon store vaccines. To the villagers it is truly a light in the darkness, symbolizing hope for a better future. A chief had once stated their need:

“If you can bring us medical care, we will wait for God to bring us food, because our young mothers are dying and our young children are dying.”

- A Chief in Piol, Sudan
This first milestone was possible thanks to efforts of Upper Arlington Freshman House D service-learning project and donations totaling...

Independence Day!

Jok Dau and Bol Aweng fled their village twenty-four years ago from war and genocide. They survived attacks by lions and soldiers and lived 14 years in refugee camps. Now their lifelong dream is finally coming true. This Saturday, July 9 2011, The Republic of South Sudan will officially become the world’s newest nation.

The Republic of Southern Sudan     Written by Jok Dau
On July 9, 2011, after 50 years of savage civil war, the Republic of South Sudan (ROSS) was born. The International Community witnessed and supported the jubilant people of South Sudan after their many sacrifices, dreadful struggles, and people being buried everyday. As I stood in Chicago City Park, where South Sudanese and their American friends celebrated ROSS Independence Day, I thought of...
