The Republic of Southern Sudan     Written by Jok Dau
On July 9, 2011, after 50 years of savage civil war, the Republic of South Sudan (ROSS) was born. The International Community witnessed and supported the jubilant people of South Sudan after their many sacrifices, dreadful struggles, and people being buried everyday. As I stood in Chicago City Park, where South Sudanese and their American friends celebrated ROSS Independence Day, I thought of my exile in 1987 and the long trek with horrific killings, terrible weather conditions, extreme hunger and thirst, painful snake bites, wild animal chases, and blistered feet. Two decades of separation from parents, relatives, and friends are the worst memories.
All hardships I had endured with God’s help changed from pain to joy when the ROSS national flag was raised and the people of South Sudan sang the national anthem. Our fallen heroes were commemorated for their braveness. The soldiers of the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) had attacked a position of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) fortified with tanks and jet fighters using only AK-47’s and RPG’s. The people of South Sudan were denied access to resources and political participation. They now have religious freedom and will no longer be in the Arab League with no identity. We are proud Africans, not Arabs. May God bless the ROSS, and may those who died for this country rest in peace.
I thank God profoundly for keeping me alive to celebrate this day. Every nation pays a costly price to see its flag flying. I urge all people of South Sudan to work tirelessly so this new nation meets the requirements of a State as defined by International Law and the UN. Long live the Victory of the South Sudanese! Long live SPLM/SPLA! South Sudan, Oyeeee! SPLM/SPLA, Oyeeee!
